Artist and cultural instigator Kristine Schomaker posed nude for 60 artists, in positions and locations of their choosing, to understand how others regarded her and, in the process, reconcile those perceptions with her own beliefs about her body, its beauty and value.  I chose to design a repeating pattern for gift wrap instead of a traditional portrait. For the inaugural exhibition, I also created a step and repeat for viewers to memorialize the event.

Portraits of Power

Reconstructed men's suits

"Edited" suitpants, frames. the intrinsic symbolism of fabric, pattern, and it's uses through men's business suits- global symbols of power and wealth. The deconstructed and reconfigured garments, once vessels of corporate and government authority, become portraits of complex current issues such as income inequity, gender bias, autocracy, and corporate influence.

Without Design or Sketch: The Story of the Room Launch LA Gallery, Los Angeles, CA approaches the context of Whistler's Peacock Room as a platform to address issues related to contemporary art practices such as the boundary between art space and living space, the perceptions of decorative and fine art, the value of art and patronage, and art’s engagement with social and moral issues versus its purely visual components.
For this exhibition, I created objects of comfort and beauty, laden with underlying meaning.

Pandemic Papers

A selection of paper based works created during the Covid Pandemic.  Records and documentation of significant events are laser printed onto decorative craft paper, then die cut into floral shapes as if to soften or even weaken the impact. These die cut flowers and shredded documents get reconfigured in a number of ways, constantly evolving.

Redacted

West Gallery, California State University Northridge

Redacted is based on a Transportation Security Administration training manual improperly published on a government website and now available on Wikileaks. The original redactions were done digitally and easily removed, exposing all of the hidden information and leaving a thin box indicating the previously concealed area.

The manual and other government documents were sent through a thermal printing fax machine. This piece is constructed from the fax cartridges bearing the negative images of the training manual, radiation readings from airport scanners around the country, charts, graphs and air transport related maps. The fax machine is emblematic of the bureaucratic office as well as creating an additional copy of this sensitive material, further violating the security of the information and referencing the scanning methods in use at airports.

The piece redacts the space it occupies, obscuring it with a large black mark. The material of the fax cartridge alternately hides and reveals the imprinted information according to the light. The delicacy of the cartridge ribbon contrasts with the weight of National Security and the promise of consequences for allowing controlled information out into the world.

Security Measures

In the years after 9/11,  our perception, expectation and policies of security still drive us.  This work looks closely at some of the theatre and branding of "Security" in the  post 9/11 world.
